AFCI Breaker Protection
AFCI breakers or Arc Fault Current Interrupters are designed to prevent residential fires. AFCI circuit breakers unlike standard circuit breakers monitor current flow in the entire circuit for signs of arcing which can lead to a fire. A normal breaker will only trip if you plug in too many things or if there is a fault to ground. Since a standard breaker does not connect to all the wires within your homes circuit it is unable to monitor for signs of arcing that can lead to a fire.
An AFCI breaker will trip if arcing occurs and shut down power to prevent a potential fire. Arcing is most commonly caused from a poor or loose electrical connection, faulty equipment, damaged insulation, or alternate paths of current flow within a circuit or device. The national electrical code now requires AFCI protection for every circuit within the home except bathroom plugs, garage plugs, exterior plugs, or larger 240volt appliances.
Older homes often lack AFCI protection and are at an increased risk for an electrical fire. Let our professionals evaluate and upgrade your electrical system with AFCI protection for increased safety and peace of mind for your family. If you have a newer home already equipped with the proper AFCI protection our technicians can assist in troubleshooting any issues that may be causing your new AFCI breakers to trip.
