There are many requirements and safety considerations to be made when connecting a hot tub to your home's electrical system. As with any appliance or equipment where water and electricity will be present GFCI protection is extremely important. GFCI protected disconnect boxes help to ensure that if there is ever an issue with your new spa or hot tub the power will shut off to prevent the risk of electrocution. These GFCI disconnect shut off boxes must also be placed at least 5ft from the spa while not exceeding 25ft in distance. This spacing must be maintained to ensure that you cannot reach the box while inside the spa but still be close enough that someone nearby will be able to readily locate the box in an emergency.
In addition to the personal safety requirements, you will need to check your electrical system to ensure that you have sufficient capacity to support your new hot tub and spa. Many spas and hot tubs have large electrical demands; typically 240volt 50amps or higher. These large demands on an older electrical system can be too much and when improperly installed can lead to overheating and damage of your homes electrical panel. Cox Electric's technicians can access your homes electric system and ensure you have the capacity to safely install your new hot tub or spa. If your home needs an electrical panel upgrade to safely install your new spa our experts can provide you with the best upgrade options.
In addition to the obvious safety considerations, and electrical requirements of connecting your new spa or hot tub, there are also manufactures minimum requirements that must be met in order to ensure your hot tub's warranty is not compromised. Many manufactures specify a minimum size or gauge wiring that must be used to connect your hot tub. If you connect your spa using another type or size wiring and there is ever an issue with your spa most manufactures will void their warranty and say the minimum requirements for connection were not met which could have lead to damage to the unit.
As you can see there are numerous considerations to be made when connecting your new hot tub or spa. Cox Electric has the experience necessary to make sure your homes spa electrical connection is done properly so you can enjoy many years of relaxing and therapy.
